Records with Fixed Lengths & Variable Lengths

Records are classified as either fixed or variable length records. Occurrences of fixed length records will be equal in length, and contain same fields. The fixed length record will contain no repeating elements.

If a record contains a repeating group of data elements, the record is designated as a variable length record.

Example:

Suppose a school keeps a record for each student which contains the following data: Name, Father, Class, Telephone Number.
